Thompson shooting for stardom

World-leading sprinter Elaine Thompson knows she is the woman to beat following her world leading performances in the women's 100m this year.

The University of Technology (UTech) star, who clocked 10.92 seconds at the Jamaica International Invitational on Saturday, is looking ahead to National Senior Championships success in June.

The Championships, two months before the World Championships in Beijing, she hopes, will open doors to her international career.

"In trials, I am looking forward to bring my best performances. All I need to do is to go back and put in a little more extra work," she said.

The UTech athlete is in prime form and high in confidence, having upset world-beaters Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria, Americans Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh, and fellow Jamaican, Kerron Stewart at the National Stadium.

"I am feeling great. when I came here at UTech, I realised that it takes some work to get on top, so I didn't worry myself or fret; I continued to train and keep on motivating myself and push myself," she said.

"This is where I reach now, so I hope it all plays out," she continued.

"The hard work that I have put in these years is paying off," Thompson added. When asked how much faster she can go, she said: "Well, you will see," with a smile.

"I have reached this stage now," she said. Thompson now has the fastest 100m this year, but recalls her "average times of 12.01" at Boys and Girls' Championships.

Those times are a stark difference to her sub-11 clocking which lines her up among the fastest women in the world currently.
