Davis reaches Contender semi-finals

Tsetsi 'Lights Out' Davis booked himself a semi-final berth in the Wray and Nephew Contender Series, with a unanimous points decision over Ricardo Planter, at the Chinese Benevolent Association auditorium on Wednesday night.

Judge Lindell Allen voted 59-55 and judges Eion Jardine and Clifford Brown 60-54 for Davis.

It was an action-packed contest, as Planter made a gallant effort to match punches with his determined and aggressive opponent. Davis just had too much punching power and resilience for him, however, and wore him down round after round.

From the end of the third round it was obvious in what direction the wind was blowing, and the official announce-ment that Davis had won by unanimous decision was just a formality.

Both men exchanged a lot of punches in the third round, and near the end of the round, Planter was cut over the right eye. The cut made him change his tactics, as in the following round he started to bob and weave and keep his head low, in order to avoid taking any blows to the head and face.

This drew some cautions from referee Peter Richards, but no points were deducted.

There are three more fights in the quarter-final round, and next Wednesday, Devon Moncriffe, who won the Contender middleweight title in 2013, will take on Jermaine Bowen over six rounds.

Moncriffe eked out a close points decision over Geoffrey Pennington, while Bowen reached the final eight with a points victory over Duke Brooks from Trinidad and Tobago.

In two amateur bouts on Wednesday, Donald Patrick from the Jamaica Defence Force defeated Donovan Ruddock from the G. C Foster gym on points, while Anthroy York from the Heavy Metal Gym also had a points victory over Carlton Reid from the St Thomas Boxing Club.
