Two men arrested for stealing batteries

Detectives attached to the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch have arrested and charged two men after they were found in possession of batteries belonging to telecommunication operators.

Reports are that, on Wednesday, April 29 about 11 a.m., members of the branch conducted an operation in Farm Town district, St Ann, which resulted in the recovery of 38 radio base station and which led to the arrest and charge of Cassius Campbell, 37-year-old scrap-metal dealer of the said district.

Last Saturday, another operation was carried out in Darliston district, Westmoreland, and 43 batteries were recovered, which led to the arrest and charge of Hensley Johnson, 52-year-old businessman of the said address.

Both persons were charged with receiving stolen property and are scheduled to appear before the Savanna-la-Mar Resident Magistrate's Court on May 26 and 27, respectively.

The batteries that were stolen from cell sites in the parishes of St Ann, Westmoreland, St James and Trelawny have an estimated street value of $9 million.

Investigations continue.
