More awards for Slack

Salcia Slack

LEIGHTON LEVY, STAR Writer

Following impressive performances at the Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference (RMAC) Outdoor Championships in Pueblo, Colorado, last weekend, Jamaica's Salcia Slack has won the RMAC Track Athlete of the Year and RMAC Field Athlete of the Year.

Slack was also named RMAC Athlete of the meet.

The University of New Mexico Highlands (UNMH) star won the heptathlon with 5,324 points; the triple jump with a best leap of 12.38m; and 400 metres in 54.64 seconds at the conference championships, which were held from May 1-3.

Her accomplishments are even more incredible considering that Slack had only started training again after suffering a hamstring strain weeks before.

No bother

She said the injury was not a bother.

"It wasn't a factor once I started competing. It just felt sore during my warm-up, but once I got going, it was good," said Slack.

The 25-year-old revealed that as a precaution, she held back a little during competition.

"I didn't go 100 per cent in my races except for the 100m hurdles, and it didn't feel too bad. I just did a little bit of everything to score maximum points for my school to win."

Field Athlete of the Year

Slack scored 59 points for her school. The UNMH senior won the Field Athlete of the Year Award for her outstanding season in the heptathlon.

Record breaking

She broke her own NCAA DII record with 6,141 points, a mark that still stands as second among all divisions and leads the next best Division II athlete by over 600 points.

Multiple events

During the season, Slack also competed in the 200m, 400m, 800m, 100h, and 400h, winning gold in four events at various meets. She also took bronze in her first attempt at the 400H, at the RMAC Outdoor Championships.

"My plan was to cop both awards like I did indoors," she said, adding that her accomplishment is historic.

"I have never seen anyone do it before, and I like to do things no one has tried before."
