Cell phone thief fined $10,000

A fine of $10,000 or six months' imprisonment faced a woman in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, after she was found guilty of stealing another woman's cell phone from her house.

Charged with simple larceny is Rochelle Barnett.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, the complainant sent the accused into her house for some ice water.

It was later discovered that the complainant's phone went missing. Some days later, the complainant called her own phone and a boy, who is known to her, answered it.

He told the complainant that Barnett had sold him the SIM card and that he had seen her with a phone matching the description of the missing phone. Barnett was later arrested and charged.

She was ordered to pay the money or serve the time.
