Woman accuses JP of indecent assault

A woman has expressed anger at having to pay for the services of a justice of the peace (JP) she recently visited.

What's worse, one of two justices of the peace became too friendly with her on one of the visits to their place of operations in St Catherine.

During the first visit to the JP in January, the woman said she went to have him sign pictures for her,bus but had to fork up the sum of $200. She also said she had to perform other favours.

"The one in January told me I was looking so pretty and that he wanted a hug," the woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, said.

Agreeing to give him what she described as a little hug, she felt the man placed his hand on her bottom. "When I was leaving he put his hand on my butt," she said.

On her second visit to the same premises, the woman had to pay $700 to a different JP and had to produce her tax registration number and an identification card.

Immediate past president of the lay magistrates Association, Dr Paulette Francis-McGregor, who is a justice of the peace, said it is illegal for JPs to collect money in exchange for their services.

"We do not charge for our services. It is illegal. Anybody found doing so we will lose their commission," said Dr McGregor.

She also pointed out that last year an individual was found in breach and lost his commission as a justice of the peace.
