Windsor Heights community centre gets computers

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

Residents of Windsor Heights, St Catherine, now have access to a state-of-the-art internet café at a cost of $4.1 million after the Universal Service Fund made it possible through the provision of 25 computers.

The computers were handed over to the residents recently at the Windsor Heights community centre.

It was hailed as a great addition to the community.

"This is a dream come true as for years, we have been trying to have the centre be a productive place where the residents can benefit, " Councillor Norman Scott said.

Chief executive officer of USF, Hugh Cross, said the centre was one of 213 developed throughout Jamaica.

Meanwhile, Technology Minister Philip Paulwell endorsed the centre as a "success" story.

"We have spent $600 million in the project, so far, and we have 60 more to come on stream," the minister said.

He said the centre should be used as a resource centre for research, school- based assessments and literacy studies, and the USF is committed to pay the internet bill for the centre.

Member of Parliament Denise Daley, along with community members, welcomed the new addition.
