Here we find out a little more about their journey to MKQ Finals.
Name: Okimo Oneil Facey Hometown: Highgate, St Mary Age: 19 Looks can be deceiving for this fiery contestant, who spits lyrics like volcanoes shoot lava. From as early as primary school, Lava Vein was working on his music, heavily influenced by dancehall artiste, and MKQ judge, Professor Nuts. "I used to listen to Professor Nuts with my friend Devin di Dakta. We used to make songs and such, so that's where I got the inspiration from listening to Professor Nuts," he recounted. Despite having always been good at music, it wasn't until Lava Vein decided to get involved with Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall that he really became passionate about it. "I just used to do music because I have the talent, now I have persons around me who pushed me, motivated me and encouraged me not to waste my talent," he said. "Devin knows me and what I'm capable of so only thing I can say is that he should put his best forward because I'm not taking any chances or giving any whatsoever."
Devin di Dakta Name: Anthony Escoffery Clarke Hometown: Highgate, St Mary Age: 19 Initially influenced to get into music by his brother, Devin di Dakta has taken that influence and coupled it with his own natural talent and flair to become one of the clear crowd favourites. Inspired by the work of Vybz Kartel, Devin di Dakta's music uses a lot of lyrical interplay, catchy words and phrases of his own making. "The easiest thing for me is making music and constructing good lyrics for my music," he said. But where the challenge lies for him is in getting his music out to the right ears, and the issue of money makes this even more difficult. "That's the hardest, especially if you don't have money. Because you need money to promote your music and the radio stations and the party people dem won't promote the thing without money." Deejaying his words of warning to Lava Vein, Devin says: "In a competition but nuh really in a competition, just want the fans to love mi song, but doa mi can get cross like Bounty di don, mi prefer fi get dem girl fi become mi fan."
The finals will be at the Fisheries Car Park, downtown Kingston, with performances by Bounty Killer, Aidonia and Ikaya. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. Viewers can watch the two-hour live special on TVJ starting at 9:30 p.m. |
