no bail for Carmax director

Bail was again denied for principal of Car-max Jamaica, Darren Blake, when he appeared on Friday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Blake was previously denied bail when he appeared in the court on April 23. He returns to court on May 26.

He is charged with multiple counts of fraudulent conversion after several reports that he was entrusted to sell motor vehicles on behalf of persons. Blake was arrested on March 13.

On Friday, numerous complainants who attended the session were anxious to hear new details favourable to them. However, according to the prosecution, $161,000,000 is owed to the complainants and the numbers are rising as the investigation deepens.

Blake's lawyer, Raymond Clough, in seeking bail for his client, told the court that prior to his appearance in court, the investigating officers had told him that they did not object to his client being bailed at this time and it was the subject of the court.

Resident Magistrate Simone Wolf-Reece, however, told the attorney that even though the police did not object, in her view nothing has changed since Blake's last court visit.

Clough also told the court that although his client was a principal of Carmax, his role was minimal and he was not involved in the operations of the company. He said he was anxious for the other alleged principal, Ian Lyn, to return to the island.

"We need Mr Lyn because we need to look into the matter carefully," said Clough.

RM Wolfe-Reece also heard from lawyers representing the complainants.

One attorney said, "based on my investigation at the Registrar of companies, the records show that Mr Blake is the sole director of the company ... Mr Lyn was removed late last year, leaving Blake as sole director."

Resident Magistrate Wolfe-Reece then told Blake that she was not of the view that bail should be given at this time.
