Williams an inspiration says coach

LIVINGSTON SCOTT, STAR Writer

Toni-Ann Williams' 20th-place finish at last Friday's NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, did not turn heads or raise eyebrows, but it was the best all-around performance by a California gymnast at the 2015 NCAA and the best all-around finish for any (University of California/ Berkerley) gymnast.

Williams finished 36th on floor (9.85), 44th on vault (9.825), 58th on beam (9.75) and 63rd on bars (9.80), but although she didn't perform to her expectations, she gained very valuable experience.

Her coach, Justin Howell, believes that experience will prove priceless, not only to her, but to the Cal programme and her teammates.

"Toni had an amazing performance; to be a freshman, first year in competition and come here and hit four out of four routines, she did an amazing job. She made her team and university very proud and we couldn't ask for a better performance, and for her to handle that kind of pressure as a freshman was very remarkable.

Meanwhile, Williams was also excited by her showing.

"My first experience at the NCAA championship was very exciting. I got to see how the teams work and the energy and excitement they brought to the floor. Overall, it was a great experience, and I am so glad I was able to make it here," she told Calbears.com.

"Next year, I want to come with the team and see how the teams here train and compete, and I know that Cal can do it at the NCAA championships every year. We are focus, and we are driven," she continued.
