Woman pleads guilty to running overseas job centre

A St James woman accused of operating an illegal overseas job recruitment centre in Montego Bay has pleaded guilty and will be sentenced on Monday.

Maureen Brown from Montego Bay was charged with for obtaining money by false pretence and forgery last week, by detectives from the Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Branch (C-TOC).

Reports said on April 22, 10 men from Portland visited the United States Embassy in Kingston with forged job letters seeking Seaman's visa. The men were detained at the embassy and investigations revealed they had paid large sums of money to Brown.

Brown was subsequently charged and taken before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. She pleaded guilty to 10 counts of obtaining money by false pretence and 10 counts of forgery.

The police are asking anyone who may have paid over money to Brown for her service, to contact C-TOC at 922-2373 or 922-7322. The lawmen are also advising the public to follow legitimate procedures in obtaining a visa, as failure to do so can result in them being arrested.
