André Williams, STAR Writer A Jamaican who was among those selected last evening in the 2015 NFL draft held at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago says he will be coming back to Jamaica to help improve the health care system there. THE WEEKEND STAR understands that 23-year-old Laken Tomlinson (G) was drafted by the Detroit Lions as the no.28 pick in the first round. While giving his acceptance speech the former Duke University football star, who migrated from Jamaica at age 10, did not forget his homeland. He asserted, "My goal in life is to one day go back to Jamaica and Change the health care system there." Tomlinson also made mention of his immediate family, acknowledging the death of his grandfather in Jamaica. His walk-up song, after being drafted was Thank You Mama by Sizzla, which resonated the speakers inside the packed auditorium. The euphoria of a Jamaican being drafted touched home with many natives locally and internationally who took to social media to affirm their appreciation. Anijah Christie wrote: "Bap Bap Bap Yaad yute get draft inna dem industry mi can't vex wit that proud nite fi nuff a weh long time we inna..." Kimeisha Johnson wrote: "#nfldraft Laken tomlinson from Jamaica #28 pick goes to the detroit lions coming from duke university. Yute is pre med also...says he wants to go back to Jamaica and help improve the healthcare system. Congrats yute #bigdeal By the way he chose thank yuh momma by sizzla to play while he walk up the stage. #sizzla" Dalton Myers wrote: Congrats Laken Tomlinson #NFLDraft "... My grandfather died back in Jamaica and I decided to become a doctor ... My goal in life is to one day go back to Jamaica and change the health care system there."
