St Elizabeth man on fraud charge offered bail

Launtia Cuff, STAR Writer

A St Elizabeth man was on Monday offered bail in the amount of $1 million when he appeared in the Santa Cruz Resident Magistrate's Court for breaches of the Law Reform (Fraudulent Transactions) (Special Provisions) Act 2013.

The allegations are that in March, Edroy Thompson was in Santa Cruz trying to acquire a wrecker to tow a vehicle when he was approached by an out-of-uniform police officer who took his phone and searched it finding identity information. Thompson was subsequently arrested and charged.

The 24-year-old, however, claims that the phone had been purchased from someone and that he had no knowledge of such information.

Under conditions of his bail, Thompson will report to the Siloah Police Station everyday between 6 a.m to 6 p.m. He will only be allowed to be in possession of one cell phone. This cell phone in addition to all internet capable devices must be registered with the investigating officer. He was also banned from all internet cafés and warned about possessing any information that may be construed as identity information whether in physical or digital forms.

Thompson will return to court on July 13 when the case will again be mentioned.
