From prison to the recording studio

Dane Lee ready for the big times

He spent 10 years in Florida state prison for a gun charge. During that time, he sought comfort in music and learnt to play the guitar. Upon his release, singer Dane Lee, the son of veteran Jamaican producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee, continues to hone his musical chops.

Lee has been working with producer John 'Jon FX' Crawford on his debut album. He has also done work with Florida-based SoBe Entertainment as well as veteran producer Tony 'CD' Kelly.

"When I got incarcerated that was when my musical journey actually began. I have written songs for people like Ky-Mani Marley and an artiste called Tabius Tate," Lee shared.

The singer was born in Miami, Florida, but grew up in Greenwich Farm, Kingston 13. As a teenager he moved to Meadowbrook Estate and finally relocated back to Florida in 2003.

He attended the Stella Maris Preparatory, George Headley Primary, St Andrew Technical and Hydel High. In Florida, he attended Broward College where he studied music technology.

Now 30, he gives props to his father who has helped to shape him musically. He said his father prepared him mentally as far as the industry is concerned.

Open mind

"Well, he has given me all the tools I need to be successful in this industry, including having an open mind towards things and staying true to the music in regards to the emotions I convey when recording. He also told me to accept constructive criticism, because there is always room for improvement, and most importantly don't ever lose yourself," said Lee.

Prior to the release of his debut album, Lee will release a song for the summer titled She Loves to Party.
