NOMINEES' PROFILES

Spice

Spice had a massive year in 2014 with So Mi Like It racking up millions of views on YouTube. She followed with Conjugal Visit featuring Vybz Kartel, which also got good reception, as well as numerous overseas shows weekly.

The nominations for STAR Awards 2015 have been out, and you have been registering your votes. Today, we feature candidates in the Female Deejay of the Year category. See the full list of nominees on pages 53 and 54. Register your vote at www.jamaica-star.com/peoples_choice.

Ishawna

Last year was one of highs and lows for Ishawna. She had a nasty public break-up with her ex-fiancé, Foota Hype. But the year was also her best year since entering music. Her popularity grew with songs like Restraining Order and Cry Baby which were somewhat about her relationship that had ended.

Gaza Slim

A former member of the Vybz Kartel-led Portmore Empire, the young singer has been coming into her own in recent years. Last year, she had some success with Cya Do It, a collaboration with I-Octane. She also flipped the script with the gospel-inspired song Mercy On Me Lord that also did well.

Lady Saw

Lady Saw has always been a stalwart in dancehall music. Although she has not been releasing as many songs as in the past, she had maintained a presence with performances at major events and the release of her Alter Ego album, as well as her Infidelity collaboration with Bugle which got good feedback.

Tifa

While her songs like Back It Up and Body Up got decent reception, it was the business side of Tifa's career that really did well. Last year, the Digicel brand ambassador released her headphone line and she also signed a record deal with North American-based independent label, Island Kings Records.

J Capri

J Capri is somewhat of a newcomer, but the artiste has been gaining popularity since doing Pull up to Mi Bumper with Konshens and Whine & Kotch with Charly Black in 2013. In 2014, however, she established herself as a contender with solo efforts like Reverse It and Boom and Bend Over, both of which got millions of YouTube views.
