Cops out to seize Carmax assets

The police said they will be going after the assets of used-car dealership, Carmax Jamaica Limited.

President of the car dealership and former president of the Jamaica Used Car Dealers Association, Ian Lyn, is being sought by the police in connection to a fraud case in which it is alleged that Carmax failed to pay over more than $100 million it collected from the sale of motor vehicles.

Senior Superintendent Clifford Chambers of the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime division, said the police have engaged the Financial Investigation Division to go after the dealership's assets.

"We are hoping to lay some claims on the assets under the Proceeds of Crimes Act, and for that process we are using the Financial Investigation Division as a support in our plight to take control of any assets we can lawfully," he said

SSP Chambers also said authorities could invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty to have Lyn, believed to be off the island, extradited to Jamaica to answer to allegations of fraud against him.

Lyn had been previously given time to turn himself into the police.

Head of the Fraud Squad, Superintendent Anthony McLaughlin, said complainants in the fraud case against Lyn include politicians, executives and members of the security forces.

Meanwhile, Darren Blake, director of the dealership, who is charged in the fraud case, had his $1m bail revoked in the Corporate Area RM Court on Thursday.
