Puddy Pooh to outclass Oaks rivals

RICHARD Azan's PUDDY POOH is confidently expected to again outclass rivals in the 10-furlong Jamaica Oaks following her 1000 Guineas romp at a mile.

The big filly sprinted clear of pesky MOM'S STUDENT in the Guineas which was run on a wet track. Third-place BERRANCA, who had beaten MOM'S STUDENT by a length and a half in the 1400-metre Thornbird Stakes, was five lengths behind in the Guineas, leaving her backers, and others, pointing at the wet track.

six furlongs

Connections of Lorne Kirlew's NOTHINGBUTTHEBEST believes their filly didn't handle the wet track well either and believes the Oaks will prove that theory right. NOTHINGBUTTHEBEST breezed six furlongs in 1:14.0 on Sunday, exciting her connections.

However, that should have been no surprise as she is bred to sprint, Blue Pepsi Lodge-All The Best, and will produce fancy footworks at exercise

PUDDY POOH's level of improvement suggests a horse being primed for a shot at the Derby. She has trained with stablemate FRANFIELD, keeping pace in a seven-furlong gallop timed in 1:30.0.

Meanwhile, post-position one shouldn't stop THE GUV from mowing down rivals in tomorrow's 1300-metre overnight allowance as the speed looks set to come back to Spencer Chung's nine-year-old inside the final half-furlong.

Speedsters such as SUNLIGHT EXPRESS, AMICABLE, RED FLAG and RUM PUNCH are set to play into THE GUV's hand after his narrow miss at 1200 metres a month ago.

Partnered by Shane Ellis, the run-on sprinter swept past all but DOUBLE THE HONEY close home, failing by a nose to nail the Wayne DaCosta-trained foreigner.

half furlong

RED FLAG had chased DOUBLE THE HONEY from the start that afternoon and returns five pounds lighter, 50.0 kilos, due to apprentice O'Brien White's two-kilo claim.

Whereas THE GUV will still carry 54.0 kilos and RED FLAG has less potent speed to contend with, lasting the extra half furlong will be tough for the speedster.

Chung has thrown in speedy AMICABLE and DaCosta has RUM PUNCH in the 12-horse line-up. SUNLIGHT EXPRESS is the fastest of the lot and will ensure RED FLAG is kept honest, setting up a grand finish for THE GUV and down-in-class TIME FOR ARMS.

Whereas TIME FOR ARMS would have preferred an easier pace and, at least, another half-furlong, THE GUV is at home at 1300 metres.

Chung's nine-year-old grey has no need to chase the early speed and, unlike most horses, will have no problem weaving through traffic on the inside. The speedsters are prone to run wide, leaving him with his favoured passage, the rail run, entering the straight.
