Carmax director remanded

Director of Carmax Jamaica, Darren Blake, was yesterday remanded before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. He is charged with 88 counts of fraud amounting to just over J$161 million.

The Crown led evidence that between December 2014 and last month, Blake sold vehicles belonging to several persons but failed to turn over the proceeds.

Blake's attorney, Raymond Clough, said his client was previously granted J$1 million bail. He said Blake was asked by lawmen to come in for questioning in relation to the matter, but was again taken into custody.

He said his client had fully cooperated with investigators, and should be granted bail. Prosecutors disagreed, saying other complainants have come forward.

"The situation has substantially changed at this point," said Resident Magistrate Maxine Ellis. "I would wait for the officers to indicate whether or not they have done their fact finding,"

Clough said Blake's business partner, Ian Lyn, was largely responsible for Carmax's operations. Lyn is being sought by police.

Subsequently, the RM remanded Blake until May 1.
