A drug mule who attempted to escape police custody by jumping through a window at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) and badly injured his legs in the process, was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment recently.

Charged with possession of, dealing in, attempting to export ganja and escaping police custody is Leon Davis.

On Friday when the matter was mentioned in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, the accused pleaded guilty to all counts.

The court was told that Davis ingested 69 pellets containing 1.3 pounds of ganja. He was schedule to travel to Curaçao.

He was fined $2,000 or six months for possession; $4,000 or six months for dealing; $8,000 or six months, plus 12 months' imprisonment for attempting to export ganja and six months for escaping custody.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said, "You'll only do 18 months, that's all."

Allegations are that, while Davis was at KPH, he asked a police guard to use the bathroom and his handcuffs were removed.

During that process, Davis attempted to escape by jumping through a nearby window.

He was immediately caught because both feet were fractured when he landed. Davis was assisted by two people to enter and leave the courtroom.
