Man killed, gun seized in Salt Pond shoot-out

A man who was part of a group that engaged the police in an alleged shoot-out was killed and a high-powered weapon seized yesterday.

He has been identified as Nefta Akefa Halstead, 38-year-old, unemployed of Salt Pond Road, Spanish Town, St Catherine.

The Star was informed that about 6 a.m., members of the Proactive Investigation Unit and the Special Foot Patrol Team were on operation in Salt Pond.

It is said that the police party entered a premises and a group of armed men fired at them. The police returned fire and the group scattered in different directions. When the shoot-out ended, Halstead was found clutching an AK47 Rifle.

Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police (ssp) Nesbeth said the police will continue its fight against crime.

"This makes three AK47 Rifles seized within three days; one at Frazier's Content, one along March Pen Road on Tuesday and the one this morning, " SSP Nesbeth said.

He said the police would be continuing their drive to bring peace and stability to the Old Capital.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has since launched a probe into the matter.
