Military Move the firm choice

Jimmie, STAR Racing Writer

SEASONED campaigner MILITARY MOVE should run rivals into the ground in tomorrow's overnight allowance at a mile. The six-year-old gelding has0 been edging closer to the winners' enclosure with each start this season and looks set to be unsaddled on the grass by veteran jockey Winston Griffiths.

Trainer Lawrence Freemantle's MILITARY MOVE has maintained his form from last season when he placed in big pre-Superstakes races such as the Owen Silvera Memorial, finishing third behind TYPEWRITER and UNCLE TAF.

Making his 2015 debut in February, MILITARY MOVE was third behind the younger and vastly improved pair of FRANFIELD and HOVER CRAFT at a mile. He returned March 11 to find HOVER CRAFT better at 1700 metres, beaten by three and a half lengths.

Having trained on nicely over the winter, MILITARY MOVE represents the class in tomorrow's line-up and is not too heavy, at 54.0 kilos, to make every post a winning one.

RAGING PROSPECT appears to be the only matching speed to keep MILITARY MOVE honest. However, MILITARY MOVE has had the better of the Fitzroy Glispie-trained runner in their last four meetings, as RAGING PROSPECT has been unable to rediscover his form of two seasons ago.

Anthony Nunes' RELAMPAGO, last year's Derby winner, returns off a six-month lay-up, unraced since finishing fifth in October's Governor General's Stakes. The four-year-old colt galloped six furlongs, in 1:14.0, Sunday morning and could be dangerous returning fresh.

However, Nunes' Derby winner badly lacks pace and is too close at the weights, 53.0, kilos to be given any chance of getting close to the likes of MILITARY MOVE and RAGING PROSPECT (50 kilos) down the backstretch.

It should be noted, though, that Nunes has LOCKED AND LOADED in the event, returning rather quickly after finishing down the track two Sundays ago at a mile.

LOCKED AND LOADED, RAGING PROSPECT had disputed the lead into the lane on March 11 before the trio was gobbled up by HOVER CRAFT. Nunes' game plan is clear. LOCKED AND LOADED, carrying 50.0 kilos, will be the kamikaze horse for RELAMPAGO to pounce.

That ploy could very well backfire as Cashbert Khwalsingh's DEO VOLENTE, carrying 48.0 kilos, is a far more dangerous come-from-behind horse, on form, than RELAMPAGO.

MILITARY MOVE, however, has added a new element to his game. He doesn't need to be in a breakneck duel on the lead. Sitting in the catbird seat, behind LOCKED AND LOADED and RAGING PROSPECT, should still give him enough room to get first run and beat the stayers to the wire.

Winston Griffiths ... will ride MILITARY MOVE
