Vendors cash in on Obama's visit

AndrE Williams, STAR Writer

Vendors turned out as near as they could to National Heroes Circle, in order to cash in on the 'OBAMA-NIA', as scores of onlookers gathered to get a final glimpse of United States President, Barack Obama.

Though Obama's stint at the park was short, many persons stood around for hours eagerly awaiting his arrival.

Sections of Duke Street, East Street and other connecting roads were blocked by the security forces in preparation for the arrival of the US president.

Andrea Willis, a juice vendor, told THE WEEKEND STAR that she managed to sell three bags of fruit juice in an hour.

She said, "Obama fi come every year cause a fuss mi ever see excitement ova one man weh you can see up close, people stand up ina the sun fi hours and get thirsty so mi juice dem sell, mi mek a fast change."

Even police personnel were spotted obeying their thirst, patronising with said vendors.

A man, who gave his name as Ricky, told our news team that anywhere children are gathered he usually find strong sales and that was his reason for venturing to the area.

Ricky is a cotton candy vendor.

He said jokingly, "Mi have blue, red and white, American colours for Obama."

Meanwhile, yesterday, President Obama wrapped up his visit to Jamaica following a brief ceremony at National Heroes Park where he laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in honour of veterans of World War I and World War II.
