St Catherine JP on fraud charges

A St Catherine justice of the peace accused of fleecing several persons out of hundreds of dollars was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

He is Everett Jackson; charged with fraudulent conversion. Other charges were also laid against him as well as his company on Wednesday.

However, he pleaded not guilty to them.

The Court heard that a number of jobseekers paid over monies amounting to more than $1m in the hopes that jobs would be provided to them in Canada. However, this was not forthcoming.

According to Christian Tavares-Finson, the attorney representing the complainants, they were assured that they would have received jobs.

He pointed out that he hadplans to write to the director of public prosecutions (DPP) as advertisements are still being run in the press guaranteeing people for jobs.

Subsequent to this, Resident Magistrate Simone Maddix then ordered that Jackson be remanded until April 22, for the matter to be mentioned.
