Maestro Don dropped from label

Deejay falls out with champion jockey's label

Curtis Campbell, STAR Writer

Rising dancehall artiste Maestro Don claims he has been dropped by Warrior Chief Production, a label operated by champion jockey/producer Dane Nelson and his wife.

According to the young deejay who has been working with the label since 2011, Nelson decided to end their working relationship.

The artiste believes this was done because he asked to have a lawyer and his mother read through a contract before he signed it.

He also disclosed that he and Nelson's wife did not get along well, which caused several internal issues. However, he was committed to working with the label and only wanted to be sure his contract was mutually beneficial.

"We had a verbal agreement for three years, but we just decided to formalise the deal. The contract was presented to me and I was told that I should sign it in-front of them at the meeting. I said that cannot be right, I want to bring the contact to my mother and my lawyer first and from I said that I realised that was causing a problem for them," he said.

The artiste claims that he later saw a post on their Facebook page that Maestro Don was no longer a part of Warrior Chief Production.

He said he has not been disrespectful to Nelson, nor his team and is surprised that he was dropped.

"A real big people reasoning wi did a have. I didn't say I wasn't going to sign to contract, but since they wanted to transform the friendship relationship into a business one, I wanted to make the correct business steps. All issues could have been negotiated and I just want it be clear that I didn't leave the label," he said.

The artiste who is currently pushing his own label, said other artistes before have shown disloyalty to persons who introduced them to the music industry, however his situation is different.

"A me alone now and mi same friend dem. The only thing I will face now is some financial difficulties. However, my talent will speak for itself. I turned down three labels before in favour of Warrior Chief Records. But I just want people to get their facts straight before they talk because I was loyal to the label and only who feels it knows. What hurt me is because I did not say I wasn't going to sign the contract," he said.

Don Maestro also highlighted that there were issues with Nelson's wife, Tashamay Nelson.

"This whole thing is misunderstanding and miscommunication. Dane Nelson is the CEO of the company and his wife is the manager, and sometime, the way she speaks to me, I don't like it vice-versa. So to be honest, we were having some differences in the camp," he said.

THE STAR contacted Warrior Chief Production for comment, however she said. "We are not interested on commenting on that".

The artiste is currently promoting singles such as Yu A My Gyal, My Life and Cyah Top Mi. The deejay will be releasing a new EP with Clear Air production.
