Young Boyz to face US in big test

MARC STAMP, STAR Writer

Jamaica will hunt a spot in the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup when they face the United States of America (USA) in a CONCACAF play-off game at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula in Honduras, tomorrow starting at 5 p.m. (local time).

The Young Reggae Boyz are in this situation after finishing second in the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship Group A on 10 points, behind Honduras (11). USA, also finished on ten points, but Jamaica ended ahead of the Americans because they won that clash 1-0, on Wednesday.

Automatic spot

However, with Honduras winning one automatic spot to the World Cup, Jamaica and the USA enter the play-off from Group A. Mexico have also qualified for the World Cup after winning Group B ahead of Canada and Costa Rica. With the automatic spots decided, the play-off is for two other CONCACAF representatives to the World Cup. Now, the ranking of the second and third placed teams from the two groups see USA in first; Costa Rica, second; Canada, third and Jamaica in fourth.

That means, in tomorrow's final day of the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, the play-off will see Costa Rica against Canada, to be followed by Jamaica meeting USA, three hours later. In the final game, hosts Honduras will square- off against Mexico for the championship title.

Jamaica's head coach, Andrew Edwards, expressed confidence ahead of the crucial clash, after beating the Americans in group play.

"We will be making some changes to the starting team that played against USA. It is what we think that is best for the team that will happen on Sunday," Edwards told STAR Sports yesterday from his hotel room in San Pedro Sula.Edwards pointed out that the boys are upbeat about winning the game and qualifying for the World Cup.

"The boys are very positive, but a little nervous, so we have to keep them calm and focussed," he said.

"We expect the USA team to be cautious, but we are confident in winning the game.

"In the game against USA, several top Jamaican players were rested including captain Shandel Senior, midfielder Alex Marshall and forward Nathaniel Adamolekun, who has netted three goals so far.

The Americans will rely on top goalscorers, Joe Gallardo and Joshua Perez. Both players enter the game with four goals apiece.
