RAYMOND GRAHAM, STAR Writer BOTH Calabar's Christopher Taylor and Kingston College's Akeem Bloomfield expressed shock as they did not expect to run as fast as they did after igniting the National Stadium with two sub-46 second dashes in the 400m at the Carifta Trials yesterday. "I am really happy with the win and I did not expect to run that fast as I was under the weather," said Taylor. The athletes sent the fair-sized crowd into a frenzy with their quick times. Taylor, 15, running out of lane seven, stopped the clock at an unbelievable 45.69 seconds in winning the under-18 event as he sprinted away from his rivals in the last 150m. Second-place finisher, Devaughn Ellington of Petersfield did 47.05 seconds with third going to St Elizabeth Technical's Leanordo Ledgister in 48.20. Taylor's coach, Michael Clarke, could barely find the words to describe his young charge's performance. "Groundbreaking, exhilarating and unbelievable," he said. Minutes later, Bloomfield, who had a slight injury earlier in the season and had to miss the Gibson/McCook Relays, sent another shock wave through the crowd in the under-20 race. Running the third 400m in his career, the lanky athlete was impressive event as he eased up close to the finish line, stopping the clock at an amazing 45.41 seconds. not surprised Coach Neil Harrison ran on to the track to congratulate his new charge. "I am not surprised with the win but a little surprised with the time as I did not expect to run that fast," said Bloomfield. Earlier, Edwin Allen's Saqukine Cameron and Wolmer 's Boys' Jaheel Hyde put on fabulous shows in their events. Cameron signaled her return to good form after injury last year by taking the girls Under-20 200m in a fast 23.18 seconds. As she did in the 100m Vere's, Renae Medley was second in 23.71. Nataliah Whyte of St Jago had to settle for third in 23.98. Meanwhile, Hyde, who on Saturday claimed the 400m hurdles, demonstrated his immense talent in winning the Under-20 110m hurdles. Hyde survived two false starts to turn back the early challenge of Calabar's, Seanie Selvin to win in an exceptional 13.22 seconds as Sevierville finished second in 13.42. STETHS' Marvin Williams was third in 13.68 seconds. St Jago's Shaniel English won a double as well. Following her win in the 100m on Saturday, she also took the under 18 200m in 24.07 seconds. Her teammate, Kimone Shaw was second in 24.30 seconds, just ahead of Edwin Allen's Kasheika Cameron third in 24.31 seconds. In the Boy's Under 18 200m, Calabar's Xavier Angus, who was second in the 100m was first here in 21.08 seconds, ahead of Munro's Rushabe Edwards in 21.51 seconds. St Jago's Chad Walker won the Under-20 Boys half lap in 20.97 seconds, ahead of the STETHS' duo of Nigel Ellis (21.23) and Hujaye Cornwall (21.31).
