Anderson back on track

LEIGHTON LEVY, STAR Writer

For the past two years Marvin Anderson has been an assistant coach, analyst, and student, but he wasn't where he mostly wanted to be.

Anderson, whose personal best of 20.06 seconds in the 200 metres makes him one of the country's fastest men over the distance, has returned from injury this season and so far things are going to plan.

It is a plan that involves Beijing, China, this summer.

Fast leg

The 32-year-old former William Knibb and St Jago High student ran a fast 200m leg at the Gibson McCook Relays at the National Stadium to help Cameron Blazers to a comprehensive victory in the Clubs and Institutions Sprint Medley Relay and said afterwards that it was good to be back.

"It's been a long time since I ran 200m. Just getting out there, getting back into a competitive frame of mind, it went well. I still feel like I have a lot of work to do but at least we know where we are at and training has been going well."

His coach, Bert Cameron, was impressed with the performance that saw his Blazers win in 3:23.24, more than two seconds faster than G.C. Foster College (3:25.07), and UTech (3:27.44).

"He surprised me a little bit because he was pretty fast for someone not doing any speed work. It was pretty good because he has not run in the past two years," Cameron said.

Anderson, the 2007 Pan American Games 200m silver medallist and a World Championship sprint relay silver medallist, suffered a stress fracture to the right tibia in 2013 that kept him out for most of the season.

The injury recurred in 2014 and he missed the entire season as a result.

It has been a long way back to health.

"I am still doing rehab but I have a good support system around me and hopefully things will fall in place," he said.
