March 20 court date for brothers on murder rap

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer
WESTERN BUREAU:

Two St James brothers charged in connection with two murders and two woundings committed over a three-year period had their case set for mention on March 20, following their latest court appearance yesterday.

Sibone Smith from Barrett Town is charged before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court with murder, in the deaths of Joshua Reid and Haniff Sinclair, also from Barrett Town. His brother, Tevaugn Smith, is charged with two counts of unlawful wounding, in a matter related to Sibone Smith's case.

Yesterday, presiding magistrate Natalie Hart-Hines was told that the forensic certificate in Sibone Smith's matter was still outstanding from the prosecution's case file.

Conversely, the court was told that Tevaugn Smith's matter is ready for trial.

Attorney-at-law Dalton Reid, who is part of the Smiths' defence team, asked for copies of statements in relation to the case. As a result, RM Hart-Hines set the matter for mention on March 20.

According to the allegations, Joshua Reid was shot dead outside his home by an unknown assailant on June 8, 2012, and Haniff Sinclair was shot and killed while walking with friends on August 31, 2014.

It is further alleged that following Reid's death, Sibone Smith was pointed out in an identification parade and subsequently arrested. He was arrested again after being pointed out to the police in connection with Sinclair's murder. Tevaugn Smith was charged with unlawful wounding sometime afterward, in connection with the case.
