International human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has pointed to five areas it says Jamaica needs to improve in its 2014/2015 report on the country.

It lists issues relating to the police and security forces, justice, gender-based violence, children's rights and gays and lesbians.

Amnesty says police brutality remained a concern, adding that attacks and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people have continued.

However, the human rights group says Jamaica has taken steps to deal with the issue of impunity.

Pointing to child rights, the organisation says children continued to be kept in police cells alongside adults, in some cases for several days.

It notes that this is in breach of the Child Care and Protection Act and international law.

The Youth Minister Lisa Hanna has reported that the incidence of the such cases taking place has been decreasing.

Meanwhile, according to the report, consensual sex between men remained criminalised.

It says a conscience vote by parliamentarians on legislation criminalising consensual same-sex relations, did not take place as scheduled.
