Amid the inclement weather, Portlanders turned out in large numbers for the first stop in the Digicel Appleton Carnival Pon Di Road series at Cristal Nightclub in Port Antonio, Portland, last Friday.

It was one of those evenings when the party had the large crowd rocking to soca music from radio personality Kurt Riley.

The Portland leg, which was the first of eight stops, received the carnival experience through the collaborated initiative, and many of the local people, who also won multiple prizes, were captivated by the colourful look and the transformation of the lawn of the nightclub.

Sponsorship executive of Digicel Jamaica, Daniela McLean, who was in a celebratory mood, spoke about the need to get other parishes exposed to the carnival experience, something, which she claimed has been missing for most parishes.

"The idea is to bring carnival across Jamaica for residents to enjoy the joy of the season. Both brands have similar visions, and therefore we have decided to collaborate.

Carnival is a growing element of our culture, and I am hoping that persons across Jamaica will enjoy the experience.

The Digicel/Appleton Pandoro seeks to promote double bubble, which sees customers topping up and receiving double credit. We also have local and carnival offers where phone prices will be lowered," she said.

The carnival tempo was increased following the arrival of popular MC Miss Kitty, who took time out to entertain the crowd with her carnival moves. DJ Sparks also had some dancers wining and screaming for more, while other persons were deeply rooted in Appleton rum.

Marketing director of J Wray & Nephew limited, Gary Dixon, pointed out that carnival is heavily concentrated in Kingston and that the decision was taken by the two big brands, to bring carnival outside of the Corporate Area.

"This is the inaugural stage," said Dixon. "We expect for it to be improved over years to come, with the hope that other corporate companies will come on board. So far, we are getting great support from TheStar and The Gleaner. Everyone can expect a great experience in drinking from Appleton. There are many giveaways, and the special is to buy two cues and you get a $100 credit free. We urge everyone to drink responsibly, and drinks are served only to persons 18 years and over."
