British PM adds weight to murder investigation

Prime Minister of Britain, David Cameron, has reportedly stepped in to assist the family of a British businessman murdered in Jamaica to get the justice they seek.

Six months ago, fifty-four-year-old Keith Murrain, who is from Edgbaston, was murdered hours after arriving in Jamaica for business. The Jamaican police have made no arrests in connection with the killing, and this prompted Murrain's family to seek help from their government.

Media reports in the United Kingdom said the British Prime Minister added his weight to the campaign for justice by Keith Murrain's family after being approached by Perry Barr Labour MP Khalid Mahmood.

In a letter to Mr Mahmood, the prime minister promised Murrain's mother, Josephine, that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is continuing to press Jamaican authorities for answers. "At this exceptionally difficult time, I want to reassure Mrs Murrain that the British Government is working hard to achieve justice for her son, the letter said.

Making progress

"We will continue to raise Mr Murrain's case with the Jamaican authorities at all levels. Hugo Swire, MP, the Foreign Office minister responsible for consular cases in Jamaica, will be writing to them to make clear how important making progress in this case is. Officials at the National Crime Agency in Jamaica are in close contact with the Jamaican police force and will also continue to impress upon them the importance we place on the investigation into Mr Murrain's death."

Meantime, community activist Desmond Jaddoo feels the letter does not go far enough. He wants UK detectives to become involved in the case. "Keith Murrain was a British national. The family requires justice and closure and the only way that can happen is with a full investigation on both sides of the water," he said. "The initial lack of communication (in Jamaica) has led to massive frustration for the family. It has taken six months for proper lines of communication to be opened."
