Amidst the buzz and excitement around the Bob Marley 70th Birthday Celebrations, Digicel Jamaica Foundation has also played its part by hosting an interactive learning session at the Reading Centre in Trench Town, from where Bob Marley hailed. The session was done in collaboration with 'Listen Mi Caribbean' and featured a musical presentation to more than 30 children. The children learnt about key historical figures like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jnr and their very own community hero, Robert Nesta Marley. "We are trying our best to make a change for these children," said Tamikee 'Sweets' Walsh, Trench Town Reading Centre's head librarian. "This is a loving spot that gives them an opportunity to learn anything they want. This is where we teach moral values with respect being our tagline," she said. Lined with books of all genres, the Centre is a haven for children ages four to 17 years old. It was founded 22 years ago by Canadian Roslyn Ellison and is today, credited for playing an active role in the community's development. In the meantime, CEO at the Digicel Jamaica Foundation, Samantha Chantrelle said, "The impact of this Centre on the community's children is remarkable. It inspires a love of reading and learning, a greater appreciation of culture - both local and international." "Seeing the anticipation on the faces of the children when they enter the Centre and the dedication of the staff and the community is a testament to the Centre's amazing work," she added. The Digicel Jamaica Foundation also donated education reading materials from its Enrichment Programme, Bob Marley exercise books and the Centre's first tablet. |
