Coaster buses will be taken off major routes come April 1

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) says come April 1, Coaster buses will no longer be allowed on major routes in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region.

In a recent interview, JUTC managing director, Colin Campbell, said the company now has sufficient buses to fully serve those routes.

He says about 30 Coaster bus operators will be affected and he explains that spaces will be created for more than 400 smaller buses to operate on less profitable routes.

However, lobbyists in the transport sector are criticising the JUTC for the action they say will affect the livelihood of persons who operate Coaster buses.

Representative for transport operators, Egeton Newman, says he was of the view that an agreement would have been worked out with the JUTC.

Senior director of the Jamaica Association of Taxi Owners and Operators, Lunville Watt, says the decision is disgraceful.

Transport operators are to meet on Sunday to decide the way forward.
