Jovan Johnson, Star Writer

The female student who was beaten, allegedly by a male colleague, at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies, has been released from hospital.

The extent of her injuries has not been ascertained, however, a photograph being circulated on WhatsApp shows what appears to be a nasty gash on her forehead.

In the meantime, the police have arrested the male student linked to Tuesday night's attack.

The incident comes as the university grapples with claims of gender-based violence on the campus.

Following the incident, the UWI dispatched an email to hall managers advising of an emergency meeting with them yesterday.

The UWI confirmed the incident of "assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and unlawful wounding on a female student".

It's not clear the outcome of the meeting which lasted several hours.

Meanwhile, Lerone Laing, the president of the UWI Mona Guild of Students, who attended the meeting, said the university has indicated that a press release is to be issued outlining the sequence of events and response.

In a statement, he said the guild has been "assured that campus administration as well as the law enforcers are aggressively pursuing the matter with the highest level of priority".

The Mona campus police have reportedly been keeping a close watch on both halls of residence to prevent any retaliation.
