Senior on fraud rap remanded |
|||||
Bjorn Burke, Staff Reporter A senior citizen accused of fleecing an alleged criminal out of $70,000 was further remanded when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. Charged with obtaining money by means of false pretence and conspiracy to defraud is 65-year-old Gerald Ellis, who pleaded not guilty to both offences. Allegations are that Ellis offered his services to the male complainant, purporting himself to be an employee of the Criminal Records Office of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. As such, the complainant was convinced to pay over $70,000 to the accused man to 'take care' of his criminal record. It is believed that the complainant became suspicious after his wishes did not appear to be forthcoming. Ellis was subsequently arrested and charged. By way of Ellis' attorney, Kemar Robinson, the court heard that Ellis has reportedly been in custody for several months. Subsequently, Resident Magistrate Maxine Ellis ordered him further remanded and to return to court on March 26 for trial. |
