André Williams, STAR Writer

A Jamaican hairdresser is to face the magistrate's court in The Bahamas today after she was remanded on her first appearance on Wednesday on alleged drug trafficking charge.

According to www.inewsguyana.com, Akeisha Anderson, 25, pleaded not guilty to the charge on Wednesday, February 11.

Allegations are that on February 8, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, East Bank Demerara, she had in her possession 606 grams (0.606 kilos) of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah, told the court that the defendant arrived in Guyana on January 28 last year, and was scheduled to leave Guyana on February 8, destined for Jamaica.

THE WEEKEND STAR gathered that on the day in question, she was observed by a CANU officer acting in a suspicious manner, and a subsequent search was carried out on her person when the cocaine was found.

Anderson's attorney, Mark Conway, requested bail in a reasonable sum for his client stating that she is diabetic.

Bail was, however, refused and the matter was transferred to the Providence Magistrate's Court for today.
