Accused child killer remanded

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

A St Catherine woman who is charged with the death of her six-month-old daughter was remanded when she appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Dead is Taigia Gabbidon of Gregory Park, Portmore, St Catherine.

Charged with negligence and manslaughter is Nordia Harris, 33-year-old labourer of Gregory Park, Portmore, St Catherine.

When the case was mentioned, Clerk of Court Nicole Kellier opposed bail.

She told the court that the nature and gravity of the offence warranted that the accused be remanded. After hearing the arguments, Harris was ordered remanded.

Allegations are that on January 27, about 10:45 a.m., the accused left the baby inside her house and went to Kingston.

Upon her return about 2 p.m., the child was head down in a bucket of water.

The child was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

An investigation by Detective Constable Melonie Williams resulted in Harris being charged with negligence and manslaughter.

She is scheduled to reappear on March 10, when the matter will again be mentioned.
