Prime minister wants safer roadways for disabled

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller said Jamaica must ensure that its roadways are more user-friendly to members of the disabled community.

Prime Minister Simpson Miller said relevant authorities have a shared responsibility to ensure that the nation's roads are constructed to meet the needs of persons with disabilities and able bodied persons.

special attention

She argued motorists to give special attention to persons with disabilities who traverse the roadways on a daily basis.

Her comments come days after Marlon King, an outspoken advocate for the disabled community, was reportedly struck and killed by a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus in Papine, St Andrew.

She was addressing the first meeting of the National Road Safety Council for this year, held at Jamaica House last Thursday.

The prime minister said in an effort to meet the target of less than 240 road deaths this year, the council needed to strengthen its public-education campaign by increasing the frequency of messages targeting pedestrians, motorcyclists and drivers.
