MARC STAMP, STAR Writer XLCR Fi Life, a group of Excelsior High School past students contributed bursaries towards the education of four students from that institution during devotion on Friday. The group handed over bursaries valued at $25,000 each to the Mountain View Avenue school. The recipients were Gabriella Parchment, Nackeisha Cuff, Ryan Bromfield and Leonardo Morris. Parchment and Bromfield are involved in sports. "We (XLCR Fi Life) handed over the contribution for the four students as long as they remain in school and achieve academically," Kevin Heron, head of the overseas-based group, told STAR Sports. The past students came together six years ago and have raised funds through barbecue parties and the annual Excelsior Alumni Cup football competition in New York in the United States. The Alumni Cup competition started in Jamaica, but was moved to New York two years ago. "We are trying to set an example to the kids in order for them to always give back," Heron said. He also revealed that the group's aim is to become a non-profit organisation this year. "We aim to operate as a non-profit organisation in order to get more things," Heron explained. Other members of XCLR Fi Life include Trecia McGowan, Walter Boyd and Allan Cole Jr, among others. Excelsior's principal, Veanroy Bromfield, was pleased to know that his students decided to give back. "I am appreciative and gratified as their past teacher to see them go out and develop and decide to give back," Bromfield told STAR Sports. He also pointed out that the recipients are needy students. "It is a struggle for many students to stay in school, so I'm sure that the effort is much appreciated by the present students," the principal added. |
