The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says it has embarked on an initiative to regularise the use of electricity in Rocky Point, Clarendon. The project, centered on collaboration with the residents, political representation and other community stakeholders, aims to increase the number of legal customers to more than 90 per cent over the next six months. Since November last year, 148 households and businesses, of a potential 400 customers, have become regularised. JPS director of Region Central, Keith Garvey, explained that: "Given the varying levels of infrastructural readiness of the homes and economic ability of residents, arriving at decisions on the way forward, is a process involving JPS, the political leadership and local organisations." Network redesign The project will include the re-designing of the network to use the Residential Advanced Metering Infrastructure (RAMI), as well as the Commercial Advanced Metering Infrastructure (CAMI), with added security features to protect the viability of the streetlights. In 2014, JPS saw a dramatic increase in the levels of transformer damage at Rocky Point, due to the illegal abstraction of electricity. The regularisation will result in safer and more reliable power supply for the residents. |
