Accused phone thief remanded

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer
WESTERN BUREAU:

A Trelawny man who reportedly robbed another man of his cellular phone at knife-point in Montego Bay, was remanded to verify his address, following his appearance in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court last Wednesday.

Twenty-nine-year-old Tarik Lawson from Falmouth, is charged with robbery with aggravation. His case will be mentioned on February 23.

The allegations are that, on January 8, about 6:55 a.m., the complainant was walking along Barnett Street, in Montego Bay, when he was pounced on by two men, one of whom was armed with a knife, and robbed of his phone.

It is further alleged that, a short while later, Lawson was pointed out and accosted by residents, who subsequently turned him over to the police. Under caution, he reportedly said, "Mi neva back no knife nor rob him, mi neva look on him, mi just go on my way," following which he was arrested.

In making a bail application for Lawson, his attorney Albert Morgan, told presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie that the defendant was not involved in the robbery at any point.

"It is a situation where my client was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He does not know who the perpetrator is, has never seen him before, and was never in any enterprise with him," said attorney Morgan. "He (Lawson) can find proper sureties."

"I just need to verify his address," RM Tie replied. "You will be brought back on February 23, and the investigating officer is bound over to provide the information (verification of address)."
