ROBERT BAILEY, STAR Writer The highly anticipated Jamaica Basketball Association (JaBA) annual general meeting (AGM) will be held tomorrow at the National Arena, starting at 10 a.m. Four men will be vying for the post of president to replace Ajani Williams, who is not seeking re-election. The four candidates are Paulton Gordon, Captain Clifton Lumsden, Dr Mark Broomfield, and Douglas Reid. The candidates will be vying to secure most of the 18 votes at the AGM. The AGM, which will also has on its agenda the election of new executive members, was set for April last year, but was postponed because of an outstanding audit report. An interim steering committee led by Hazel Cameron, had been running the day-to-day operations of the JaBA since the executive body was dissolved in August. Gordon, who has been involved with the sport for more than two decades, is a former executive member of the previous JaBA administration. Gordon said he has received a lot of good feedback from delegates and is confident about his chances. "It's all positive because I have spoken to most of the persons involved and the feedback has been generally positive," said Gordon. "My chances are as good as anybody there. I think I am in a good position to win the election," Gordon said. Lumsden has been at the helm of the Business House Basketball Association for more than two decades. He said his proven track record is there for everyone to see and that he has all the requisite skills and experience to lead the national association. Lumsden added that if he is successful, he will re-establish those governance practices that have served the JaBA very well in the past. "We need to re-establish those (governance practices) to make sure that they are strong, and ensure that the persons who have the responsibility to manage, do so, and do so effectively," said Lumsden. CONFIDENT Dr Broomfield, who was manager of Jamaica's team to the 2012 Centro Basketball Championships in Puerto Rico, is also confident about his chances at the elections. "I have been involved with basketball for a very long time and I love the sport. I love what the sport can do for Jamaica," said Broomfield. "I believe that the sport can create an avenue for our people to transition overseas to universities," he said. Reid, who has been involved in basketball in the western region for more than 30 years, expressed confidence in securing the required number of votes to become the next JaBA head. He is a former president of the Western Basketball Association, which is one of the most powerful conferences on the island. RACE for GENERAl SECRETARY Former JaBA president Marland Nattie, and Keisha Lindsay will face-off for the post of general secretary, today. Nattie was the general secretary in the previous JaBA administration under then president Ajani Williams. Nattie served two terms as head of JaBA between 1997 and 2008. Lindsay has been a stalwart of basketball administration for more than two decades. She is also a former national junior player basketball representative. |
