British rugby coaches to stage local coaching clinic

The Jamaica Rugby Football Union and the local British Council will be embarking on a mission to teach discipline and tenacity to the island's youth and teach them to channel their anger and aggression through the sport of rugby.

Matthew Cummings of the British council told STAR Sports that the aim is to do a scoping mission in March and launch the project in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago later this year. Similar trial projects were started in Brazil and Colombia.

"It's been successful in the other region and we wanted to see how successful it could be Jamaica," Cummings said.

"We wanted to feature a minor sport and give more females a chance to participate," he added, addressing why the sport of rugby was chosen.

"It's (Jamaican) known as an aggressive culture, and we wanted to use rugby, and it's known as an aggressive sport, and it teaches anger management and to channel their anger in a positive way."

Meanwhile, two rugby coaches from the United Kingdom will be in the island on Saturday at a rugby coaching clinic for the national under 19 team as well as local rugby coaches and players, to be staged at St George's College starting at 11 a.m.

"They will look at rugby landscape in Jamaica and see where improvements can be made. That will help to shape the design of the project," Cummings explained.

The clinic will be conducted by Paul Holmes, director of Tiger Rugby Academy, and James Walker.
