![]() Oniel Fisher in his St George's College days. - File MARC STAMP, STAR Writer University of New Mexico senior, Oniel Fisher, was in tears as he expressed his joy at learning about his draft in the first two rounds of the 2015 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft two days ago. Fisher is one of four Jamaicans that competed in the MLS Players Combine last week in Florida. He is a midfielder and was taken 19th - 40th overall - by the Seattle Sounders. The other Jamaicans selected were Romario Williams, who was selected third overall by Montreal Impact; Sergio Campbell of the University of Connecticut, who was the 19th pick in the first round, and Akiel Barrett fourth - 25th overall - out of the University of Tulsa. Fisher, on hearing the news, was excited to the point of tears. "I was in class at the time, and learnt about the good news through messages. It was a delightful feeling that brought tears of joy," Fisher told STAR Sports from New Mexico, yesterday. The former St George's College Manning Cup winner said he immediately called his mother, Francine Parkins, and told her the news. "She was happy for me, and thanks to God for giving me this opportunity in my football career," the 23-year-old Fisher added. Looking ahead, he said, "I have to go there and continue to work hard." He was also happy that his friends Williams and Campbell, as well as Akiel Barrett, were also selected. Fisher made his international debut for Jamaica's senior team in a 3-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. He also played for the Under-20 team in the 2011 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. He is scheduled to graduate from the University of New Mexico in May. |
