'Junglists' go for record 10th NPL win |
|||||
![]() Andrew Christie MARC STAMP, STAR Writer Arnett Gardens FC will hunt their 10th straight victory when they face Barbican FC in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) match-day 20 fixture at Barbican Complex tomorrow. Match time is 3 p.m. That game is one of five scheduled. Arnett Gardens, having won nine consecutive games in the nation's top football league, are sitting pretty on 41 points, seven ahead of Waterhouse and defending champions Montego Bay United. Barbican are struggling and sitting at the bottom in the 12-team league in their debut season. A win for Arnett would push the 'Junglists' to a record-breaking winning streak in the league. Former champions Reno and Hazard, as well as Village United, have also won nine straight games in previous seasons. Arnett's head coach, Jerome Waite, says he is aware that another win would break the record. "I'm aware of it," Waite told STAR Sports yesterday. "The fact that the team is playing well, the focus is on winning," he added. However, despite the gap between both clubs at this stage, Waite says his team won't take the opponents lightly. "We cannot underestimate them, as they are fighting for survival. We expect a tough fight, as all teams will be coming to beat us," Waite said. Arnett will be missing their inspirational leader, Oneil 'Bigga' Thompson, who picked up a fifth yellow card of the season against Sporting Central last Sunday. Thompson, who scored the opening goal in his team's 2-0 win against Sporting, is ruled out on card accumulation. With Thompson out, Arnett will rely on Leon Strickland, who is the team's leading goalscorer on eight goals, as well as André Clennon, Andrew Phang, Dicoy Williams, and Dasha Satchwell, to maintain their best winning form. Meanwhile, Barbican, coming off a surprise 1-0 win against fourth-place Harbour View, are looking for another win against a seasoned club. Barbican's new coach, Marvin Tate, who got off to a winning start last Sunday, will hunt another big scalp tomorrow. "That's a very tough one," Tate said about his team's clash against Arnett. "The next couple of games won't be easy." Tate, who guided Village United of Trelawny to nine straight wins during the 2003/4 season, is intent on stopping Arnett. "Personally, I want to stop them from breaking the record, as I was the coach at Village when they won nine straight games," Tate told STAR Sports. "We have done a lot of work under the previous coach, and I aim to continue on that. We have a new vision, and the players have bought into it. The goal is to move away from the relegation zone and improve in the league," he further said. Barbican has taken on a new look and approach with the addition of Andrew Christie, who is on loan from Portmore United, as well as Nicholas Smith from August Town and Akeem Brown from Tivoli Gardens. All three players came in during the January transfer window. They have joined Ramone McGregor, Mario McDonald, Shawn Lawes, Akino Bailey, Lennox Russell, and Norman Manley schoolboy Shaquille Lewis. Tomorrow's games 3 p.m. - Barbican vs Arnett Gardens at Barbican Complex. 3 p.m. - Boys' Town vs Waterhouse at Collie Smith Complex. 3 p.m. - Montego Bay United vs Harbour View at WesPow Park. 3 p.m. - Sporting Central vs Tivoli Gardens at Juici Park. 4:30 p.m. - Cavalier SC vs Reno at Stadium East. Monday night's game 8:30 p.m. - Rivoli United vs Humble Lion at Anthony Spaulding Complex. |
