The Education Ministry says it has not yet developed a list of the schools at risk of closure for 2015 due to low enrollment. The update follows a recent warning from the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) that the ministry must be cautious in how it approaches the process. JTA president-elect, Norman Allen, said the teachers' union is concerned and it will vigorously scrutinise the process. Director of corporate communications in the Education Ministry, Byron Buckley, says no list has been prepared as yet. very detailed However, he adds that the process is very detailed and all stakeholders will be involved in making the final decisions. The Education Ministry has said the move to close some schools is aimed at improving efficiency in the public school system. Last year, Education Minister Ronald Thwaites indicated that more than 200 schools at the primary level are operating way below their capacity with less than 100 students. |
