The first track and field meet of the 2015 season, the Pure Water JC Invitational, which was held on the Jamaica College grounds last Saturday, produced some outstanding results on the track and in the field, as the athletes got the season off to a flying start.

Undoubtedly, the most outstanding performer at the meet was Edwin Allen thrower Rochelle Fraser.

Competing in her final year in Class I, she had two impressive marks in the discus and the shot put, producing records and personal bests in both events. Fraser, who won the discus at the Inter-Secondary School Sports Association Boys and Girls' Championships last year, with a record performance and a second-place finish in the shot put, sent out an early message with a best of 50.40 metres and 14.96 metres in the discus and shot put, respectively. Her previous best in both events were 48.75 and 14.54 metres.

Fraser stated that she came to the meet very pumped up as she wanted to silence the critics.

"I know that this was only the first meet, but we wanted to send an early statement to those who are saying negative things, and I was motivated to do well," said Fraser.

Regarding the departure of her previous throwing coach, Marlon Gayle, who is now at rival school St Jago High, the youngster added: "Yes, we will miss him, but the show has to go on. I think our throwing department this year is even stronger, and we will be well represented in this area, once again," she continued.

"The start for me on Saturday is a good platform to build on for the remainder of the season, as this is my final year and I want to leave in style. Come March, I want to give my team maximum points in their bid to retain their title," said Fraser.

It was an overall good day for Edwin Allen in both events, for the Class I throws, as her teammate Janelle Fullerton finished second in the shot put with 14.35 metres, and fourth in the discus with 44.30 metres.
