England level Sunshine series in the dark

ROBERT BAILEY, STAR Writer

England beat Jamaica 55-47 to level the three-Test Supreme Ventures netball series 1-1 as a power outage forced a premature end to game two at the National Indoor Sports Centre yesterday.

With one minute and 15 seconds remaining, the lights went out for 10 minutes. A decision was then taken by Jamaica's coaching to award England the match.

President of Netball Jaamica, Marva Bernard, said the power outage was embarrassing.

At the time of the power outage, England was leading Jamaica 55-47.

"The game had to be aborted; one minute and 15 seconds was left in the game. Because England was so far ahead the match was awarded to them," the netball president said.

This incident prompted scores of users to take to social media expressing shock at the sudden cut in power, which returned sometime after. Up to press time, it remains unclear what led to the power outage.

Earlier, England took a 16-11 lead at the end of the first period, and remained ahead 31-25 at half time, and 43-34 at the end of the third quarter.

Romelda Aiken led for the Sunshine Girls with 18 goals from 26 attempts. She received support from Jhaniele Fowler (14 from 16) and Shanice Beckford (10 from 11).Jo Harten topscored for England with 39 goals from 43 attempts; Pamela Cookey scored nine from 11, and Kadeen Corbin seven from eight.

Jamaica coach Minneth Reynolds was very disappointed with her team's performance.

"We didn't play well. We made too many unforced errors. We made a number of changes at the start of the game because of some niggling injuries, but those changes didn't work out for us," she said. The series decider will be played tomorrow at the same venue.
