U-20 skipper confident young Boyz can get it right

Jamaica's Under-20 captain, Javaun Waugh, said the team's 2-1 win over Cuba in their warm-up friendly at the Drewsland mini-stadium on Saturday was a great boost ahead of the CONCACAF Under-20 final round championship.

However, the performance of the team and that of Waugh, who plays in central midfield, did not endear them too much to the fair-sized crowd that was on hand to support the young Boyz, but the youngster remains confident that they will get it right before Friday's opening at the National Stadium.

'It's good to go into the tournament with a win. It's very positive for the team. But I think we can keep the ball a bit more. that's all we need to do," he noted after the game.

Performance

The midfielder did not have his best game in the middle of the park and the supporters got on his back. He admitted that he fell short in his performance on the night but has no doubt he will perform well when the championship kicks off.

"I need to do a lot more in terms of tackling and passing, so there is a lot more room for improvement for me. The tournament starts on Friday and I am sure we can get it right before the tournament," he said.

The 19-year-old son of veteran Harbour View defender Clifton Waugh, said the experience the team gained from the recent Simon Bolivar tournament in Venezuela was invaluable and since returning, their aim is to work hard at improving on what they learned, and he believes the team has all the components for a successful championship.

"We started preparation a bit late compared to other teams who have been training for two years. But as far as I can see we are getting there. we have a good coaching staff and a good group of players. we just need to work harder and work as one," the young midfielder said.
