Two officers killed in separate incidents

The Police High Command is at this time expressing condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Inspector Andrea Johnson and Constable Orville Preddie, who were attached to the Sandy Bay and Asia Police Stations in Hanover and Manchester, respectively.

Commissioner of Police Dr Carl Williams expressed deep regret under the tragic circumstances in which both officers died.

"We have lost two of our officers, in only a few hours, under very tragic circumstances. It is indeed an inconsolable time for the family, relatives and colleagues. But as we mourn together, the Police High Command will support the families as best as we can during this difficult time."

Constable Preddie was murdered in his community on Thursday, December 18.

Information received is that about 10:30 p.m., Preddie was at a shop when a group of armed men entered and proceeded to rob patrons. It is alleged that the men searched Preddie and found his Jamaica Constabulary Force identification card.

Off duty

The men then opened gunfire, hitting him several times before they fled the scene. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other patrons were not hurt.

Inspector Johnson died this morning when the motor car she was driving was involved in an accident on the Long Hill main road shortly after 10:00.

Commissioner Williams also appealed to members to exercise the greatest amount of safety and care both on and off duty, whether at home, in communities or while using public thoroughfares. He added that the perpetrators of the gruesome murder of Constable Preddie will not go unpunished.

"We will not relent in finding the perpetrators for the murder of Constable Preddie. It was barbaric and cowardice, and those responsible for it will be caught."

A force chaplain has been assigned to the families to offer counselling during their time of grief.

Meanwhile, the Asia Police are asking anyone with information that can assist them with their investigations to contact them at 855-1150, Crime Stop at 311, Police 119 emergency number or the nearest police station.
